Night Owl: Bench and Bar celebrates grand opening at new address

0 Comments | Oakland Tribune, Nov 12, 2009 | by Angela Woodall

Bench and Bar has been catering to a largely gay Latino crowd for nine years with plenty of Shakira, Thalia and techno pop. Now the home of “Mr. Gay Vaquero” has moved downtown to 510 17th St., near the Fox Theater. The grand opening is Nov. 20. Just look for the rainbow flags that flank the doorway.

The original location on Franklin Street has been renamed Club 21. Having Bench and Bar and Club 21 would give owner Charles Bisbee and his husband a monopoly on East Bay gay bars were it not for Velvet in the Laurel District and the White Horse on the Berkeley- Oakland border

NovoPayment Earns MasterCard Principal Member Status

0 Comments | Wireless News, Nov 23, 2009

NovoPayment, Inc. announced that it has been granted a Principal Member license by MasterCard Worldwide for the issuance of MasterCard prepaid cards in the region, making it MasterCard’s first non-traditional institution in Latin America to receive the designation.

The announcement marks another milestone for NovoPayment, which was also first to issue Maestro/MasterCard branded prepaid open- loop cards to replace paper food and meal vouchers in Mexico, Venezuela and Peru, among other achievements. The license will allow NovoPayment to issue MasterCard payment cards directly. Nonetheless, the company plans to continue to work closely with existing and future bank partners, which it sees as key to the industry’s development.

“We are very pleased to be among the few privileged companies in the world to receive the Principal Member designation, not only because it will allow us to be more swift in deploying new programs and exploring new markets, but also for the recognition from a leader such as MasterCard and our fellow 2,400 members,” said Anabel Perez, president, CEO and co-founder of NovoPayment.

NovoPayment is a Latin American prepaid program manager and service provider and parent company of Tebca and Servitebca.

IHOPE a swig of Beaujolais has brought people into the mood for some red wine. The dark nights always put me in the mood for something comforting and sensual and red wine fits well into this time of year.

Now many areas of Italy are following with their young new wines for early drinking just like Beaujolais.

At one time all we could find was Valpolicella and Barolo. Then came the rise of the Super Tuscans who defied any wine regulations and started making some stomping wines from any grape they chose to grow.

The traditional red sangiovese was out, and cabernet sauvignon and merlot came into fashion. Latterly pinot noir, the irascible grape of Burgundy, has started to make an appearance.

The Super Tuscans come at a considerable price, but other areas make very serious wines without the star status.

The Salento Peninsula in Puglia, surrounded by the sea on three sides, has an unrelentingly hot, sun-baked climate that is cooled by the frequent sea breezes. Here the Primitivo grape is grown on alberello – vines trained to produce an umbrella of leaves that keep it from over exposure to the sun.

Many leading producers have now set up wineries using the indigenous primitivo grape in modern style production. The result is wine at an eminently affordable price, but of remarkable quality

28 states add jobs in October

0 Comments | Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Nov 21, 2009 | by Christopher S. Rugaber Associated Press

WASHINGTON — In a sharp improvement, more than half of U.S. states added jobs in October, though economists said many of the gains likely occurred in temporary employment.

That’s customarily a positive sign. Employers usually hire temporary workers before they add full-time jobs. But in this case, the temporary hiring may be inflated by the auto sector, which has boosted production to replace depleted inventories. As a result, the increase might not be sustainable.

Some of last month’s job gains also were in sectors such as education, health care and government, which have fared relatively well during the recession. By contrast, there’s little evidence that companies in hard-hit industries are hiring permanent staff.

Overall, 28 states added jobs in October. That’s up from only seven in September and eight in August. It’s also the largest number to record increases since 33 states did so in February 2008, according to the Economic Policy Institute, a think tank.

“It’s a positive signal … that states are mixed rather than uniformly bad,” said Jim Diffley, a regional economist at IHS Global Insight. Previous reports have all been “doom and gloom,” he said.

Many states that added jobs still saw an increase in their unemployment rates. The figures for jobs and unemployment come from separate reports. The unemployment rate is calculated from a survey of households, while the jobs count comes from a survey of businesses. The two don’t always match up.

The unemployment rates rose in 29 states in October from the previous month, the Labor Department said Friday

100 Million Work Days Lost to Employers Due to Back Pain

Market Wire, November, 2009

GOT
YOUR BACK will be hosting an Open House at their retail location at 521
East Hector Street, Conshohocken, PA on December 12th from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00
p.m. Guests will include health and
wellness professionals, chiropractors, massage therapists and those
interested in alternative fitness
and wellness throughout the tri-state area. Visitors will enjoy food,
beverages, a free chair
massage , and free on site diagnosis of the spine. This event is also
open to the public and special discounts will be offered throughout the
store exclusively for attendees of this event.

GOT YOUR BACK is a health and wellness store in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.
They are proud to announce the newest addition to their impressive back and
spine care product line — The Spinalis
Chair — made exclusively in Slovania by Tomaz Ham. Because millions of
people spend so much of their day sitting, Mr. Ham designed a chair that
allows for “Active Sitting.” The Spinalis Chair has a moveable seat that
was designed specifically to keep the spinal column constantly in a correct
position. At the same time the back and abdominal muscles are being
strengthened, which is the very basis for a healthy back.

240 million Americans either have suffered or will suffer from some type of
back pain or spinal injury. There
are a number of reasons why. To name just a few:

Trauma — Back pain may be caused by any of the following: poor posture,
poor sleeping habits, slips and falls, vehicular accidents, sports impacts,
strenuous exercise, work injuries, or childhood falls. These injuries, not
always immediately detected, often produce a misalignment of the bones,
which place physical pressure and stress on the nerves.

Toxicity — Toxins in the food or environment can produce serious adverse
effects in every cell, organ, gland, and body system. When they interfere
with the functioning of the nervous system, they are called toxic
subluxations.

Emotional Stress — Emotional stress of day-to-day life is often cumulative
and creates an increasing risk factor for disease. Your responses to
day-to-day stress and to traumatic life events are often programmed into
your nervous system as conditioned reflexes. When they interfere with the
normal functioning of the nervous system, back pain or disease may be a
result.

Sedentary Lifestyle — Many of us are too busy to exercise, spend too much
time sitting at the computer, driving in our cars or watching television in
positions that lead to further back pain and distress.

Here’s the GOOD news: There is an increasing awareness of spinal health and
how to achieve it naturally without spending thousands of dollars! The
Spinalis Chair is one of the most effective chairs on the market for
helping to reduce back pain

KEEP IN TOP GEAR; Decided its not the right time to sell your car? You can transform and maintain your current car, writes AARON RODGERS, by following some simple motoring guidelines

0 Comments | Daily Mail (London, England), The, August 20, 2009

Byline: AARON RODGERS

You may have been thinking of buying a new car but found that the price is too high for you at this moment in time. Which? Car revealed last month that the cost of a Ford Fiesta had risen from [pounds sterling]11,570 to [pounds sterling]13,195, while a Vauxhall Insignia went from [pounds sterling]17.981 to [pounds sterling]20,430.

That’s not the case for all cars, of course, but there are good reasons to keep hold of your current car.

www.CarSite.co.uk released data showing a three-year old car, only depreciates [pounds sterling]6 per day. In addition, www.uswitch.com says it can cost 30% more to insure a new model, compared with a 10-year old car.

And let’s face it. Can you really bear to say goodbye to your trusty old motor? It’s easy to become emotionally attached to your car, it’s even been proven by university professors – blame the hormone oxytocin for what is a very real emotional bond between man and car.

So let’s assume the wrench of separation is too much, and you’ve decided to hold on to your car for longer. Here’s our top tips to making sure it keeps on running, and the decision doesn’t come back to bite you.

FOLLOW THE RULEBOOK Make sure you follow the maintenance schedule that will be detailed in your car’s owner’s manual.

However, don’t rely entirely on that for service intervals – some items need to be replaced based on time rather than mileage.

One thing to watch out for is the timing belt – most cars need this replacing every 60,000 to 90,000 miles. It’s not a cheap job, but it’s a lot cheaper than the damage that can be caused if it goes wrong.

Many cars have known problems that crop up under certain circumstances or when enough mileage or time has been racked up. You can be ahead of the game here – most makes and models have websites and forums dedicated to them, so do some homework there. Knowing about a problem might not get rid of it, but at least you’ll be prepared if it does go wrong.

PROTECT YOURSELF

Once your car exits the protective umbrella of its manufacturer warranty (typically three years, but some car makers like Hyundai and Kia offer five and seven years respectively), you are open to all sorts of mechanical gremlins, and the associated costs of getting them fixed, so protect yourself with a good warranty, such as one from Warranty Direct (www.warrantydirect.co.uk), which start from [pounds sterling]15 a month.

You can find out the reliability of your car, and even which parts are most likely to fail, by using Warranty Direct’s Reliability Index (www.reliabilityindex.co.uk) – axle and suspension systems are most likely to fail, at 25% on average, while electrical problems are almost as frequent, accounting for 24.8% of all car failures.

Many extended warranties will sound good, but for real protection, you want to look out for poli-cies that offer cover against failures caused by simple ‘wear and tear’, consequential loss and faults found during routine service and MOT procedures. Policies that cover these are few and far between – most exclude these as a matter-of-course ‘get-out’ clause.

Couple a warranty with breakdown cover in case the worst case scenario arises. With cover from [pounds sterling]28 per vehicle, it doesn’t have to be costly to buy this kind of cover, and the roadside assistance is extensive – the RAC alone has 1,650 patrols ready to help you out of any sticky situation (www.rac.breakdowncoveruk.co.uk).

LOOK AFTER YOUR CAR

Doing the basic car maintenance tasks like checking the oil level in your car, along with brake fluid, coolant, windscreen washer fluid and tyre tread depth, shouldn’t take more than five minutes, once a month.

Oil and car care company, Comma (www.commaoil.com), states more than 50% of motorists don’t check their oil levels often enough, and a staggering 17% never check it, despite the threat of an average [pounds sterling]1,413 repair bill if your car runs out of oil.

When topping up the oil, be aware that more than 60% of cars now require manufacturerspecific oil, according to Comma. Using the wrong oil could also do your car some physical damage, causing failures within the catalytic converter or diesel particulate filter.

The legal tyre tread depth is 1.6mm but most tyre manufacturers advise it doesn’t go below 3mm. Brands like Cooper Tire (www.coopertire.co.uk) and Avon Tyres (www.avon-tyres.co.uk) are cheaper than most, just as reliable and perform well in any weather or road conditions.

Check your owner’s manual to make sure you’re using the right type of coolant/antifreeze. In basic terms, there are two types of coolant – silica-based material, or organic acid technology coolant. Using the wrong type of coolant can wear away at your engine.

Whatever your car, never rely upon the colour of the coolant/ antifreeze in your car – there are some 18 different colours of coolant on the market, and all of them are simply dyes.

AT THE CAR WASH

IT MAY sound simple, but keeping your car clean is an easy way to extend the life span of your vehicle. The dirtier the car gets, the more the everyday grit from the day’s commute erodes away at your paintwork

All-New Kia Soul Awarded 2010 ‘Top Safety Pick’ by Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

PR Newswire, Nov 18, 2009

Kia Urban Passenger Vehicle Wins Second Consecutive Highest Honor from Institute – Soul recognized for superior safety ratings in all impact crash safety tests – Five-passenger vehicle presents consumers with an attractive, quality and safety feature-laden vehicle

IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ — Further exemplifying its exceptional quality and safety, the 2010 Kia Soul has yet again been recognized by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and been given a 2010 “Top Safety Pick” award for the second consecutive time this year in the Small Car category. On the heels of being given a “2010 Automotive Excellence Award” by Popular Mechanics, named to TIME.com’s “Most Exciting Cars of 2010″ list and being named one of “10 Great and Safe Rides for Teens” by AutoWeek magazine, the spunky and youthful Kia five-door was one of only five small cars to earn the organization’s top honor for earning “Good” ratings – the highest achievable – in frontal, side, rear and rollover impact crash safety tests.

“Since its launch in March, Soul has lived up to its tagline of being Kia Motors’ affordable halo vehicle by winning numerous awards and consistently being a media and consumer favorite,” said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing of Kia Motors America (KMA). “Soul being honored with a ‘Top Safety Pick’ for a second time solidifies it as a top contender in its segment as a vehicle that offers consumers the entire package.”

Ratings from the Institute are based on results from frontal, side and rear impact crash tests, and for the first time a good performance in a roof strength test to measure protection in a rollover also was required to win. Each vehicle’s overall evaluation was based on various measurements specific to each crash angle, and overall impact on crash test dummies inside the vehicle at the time of collision. All vehicles must have electronic stability control available to be eligible.

Available in four trims, Soul, Soul , Soul! (exclaim) and Soul sport, Kia Motors’ funky five-door is a perfect embodiment of the brand’s current design-led transformation with its unique design. In addition to immense style and value, all four Soul models also offer consumers the same high level of standard safety equipment as all Kia vehicles, including front seat active headrests, dual front advanced airbags, front seat-mounted and full-length side curtain airbags, an Antilock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist System (BAS) and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). Front and rear crumple zones, side-impact door beams, an impact-absorbing steering column and Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system also come standard.

Kia Motors Product Line

Kia Motors America offers a dynamic and diverse product line to meet the needs of all lifestyles. The vehicle line features the stylish and all-new Forte compact sedan and all-new two-door Forte Koup, the highly personalizable Soul, functional Rondo CUV, award-winning Sedona minivan, purposeful Optima midsize sedan and versatile yet fuel-efficient Rio and Rio5 subcompacts. The vehicle line also features the affordably luxurious Borrego and value-packed Sportage SUVs, while the 2011 Sorento CUV arrives in showrooms in January 2010.
