GEICO Says: Parents Are the Key to Safe Teen Drivers

Business Wire, July 30, 2009

WASHINGTON — These days, teenagers have a lot to contend with: school, grades, their
peers, and also all the inherent risks of being a new driver. According
to a new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS),
while parents are equipping cars with monitoring devices to monitor
their teens driving behavior, these devices are no replacement for the
involvement of hands-on parents.

GEICO agrees and has created a parent-teen driving contract for families
(http://www.geico.com/public/pdf/autosafety/ParentTeenContract.pdf)
to use. It gives parents another opportunity to create good driving
habits for their teens.

While monitoring devices are one way to help keep tabs on young drivers,
parents remain the key factor in teaching teens to drive safely. IIHS
points out that parents are the biggest influencers of their kids
behavior, driving being no exception. The more involved a parent is in
the learning process, the less likely a teen is to be engaged in all the
risky behaviors associated with the teen years, said GEICO assistant
vice president, Janice Minshall.

The dark side of sunshine: a unique and relatively new crime wave has been targeting solar panels and their black market profits

Risk Management, Dec, 2009 by Jared Wade

Most companies have at least considered adopting alternative energy solutions. More than just having an environmental conscience, many businesses have found it simply profitable to add a few wind turbines on site or install a few solar panels on the roof. It is easy and cost-effective. For those who have opted for solar, however, there is a growing threat to receiving any long-term energy cost savings: theft.

Increasingly, businesses are reporting stolen solar panels. There are no empirical numbers to show the rise, but both law enforcement officials and those in the solar sector have been seeing more and more theft reports over the past two years. California, with its legislative mandates and incentives for alternative energy use, has experienced an increase in incidents, and wineries in Napa Valley have been hit particularly hard.

Vineyard proprietors have high energy demands and local culture and politics pushed many to become early solar adopters. Few wineries have experience as major crime targets, however, so they remain relatively vulnerable

White Van Man is whiter than white these days

0 Comments | Western Morning News, The, Oct 23, 2009

PARTIAL to the odd fry-up, a punt on the horses and a smoking habit to rival Bet Lynch, the stereotype of Britain’s White Van Man has never been too complimentary, but a new poll by Express Insurance shows this profile to be more than a little exaggerated.

Cereal for breakfast, regular exercise and holidays in the Far East are all part and parcel of the life of the White Van Man according to a new survey of more than 1,000 van drivers across the country.

The poll showed that more 40 per cent visit the gym on a regular basis and now enjoyed holidaying in Latin America, South East Asia and the Caribbean. The research, by car, motorbike and van insurers Express Insurance, was conducted to see whether the age-old image of the UK’s van drivers had evolved since radio presenter, Sarah Kennedy, first coined the phrase White Van Man back in 1997. Only eight per cent of those polled said they had to start the day with a cooked breakfast, just 27 per cent smoke and spending time with the family was the number one pastime. During the last decade, White Van Man has also become technically dependent. More than 30 per cent own laptops and keep themselves entertained with iphones and MP3 players.

Nasal-Aire II Petite Receives FDA 510(k) Clearance for Pediatric Use

Business Wire, Dec 03, 2009

BOCA RATON, Fla. — It is estimated that almost 2 million kids in the United States alone
suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and may require continuous
positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. This number has increased more
than 10 times in the last 30 years, thanks mainly to the nations
obesity epidemic. However, pediatric OSA appears to be an underserved
and misunderstood market, reports the American Academy of Sleep Medicine
(AASM). Thats because primary care physicians often misdiagnose daytime
sleepiness as related to bedwetting, nightmares or some other common
childhood issue – not OSA. That is expected to change as physicians
become more aware of OSA in children and there will be a bigger need for
comfortable treatment methods.

Pediatric CPAP mask/interface options are very limited. Until now, the
only available options were traditional over the nose? nasal masks,
that make a large percentage of kids feel claustrophobic and not
cooperate with CPAP therapy despite parental support. This constraint
has largely now been eliminated with the FDA 510(k) clearance of the
Nasal-Aire II Petite, manufactured by InnoMed Technologies,
for use on children the age of 7 years and older or weighing more than
40 lbs. InnoMed Technologies, Inc., a Mergenet Solutions, Inc.
subsidiary, competes with such companies as ResMed (RMD-NYSE), Philips
Respironics (PHG-NYSE), GE Healthcare (GE-NYSE), Covidien (COV-NYSE),
CareFusion Corporation (CFN-NYSE), among others.

The Nasal-Aire II Petite is the first and only nasal
prong/nasal cannula/nasal pillow type interface, cleared for use in
children in the home. It wears like an oversized nasal cannula,
providing a comfortable seal through the nasal prongs. This
non-claustrophobic design is likely to result in a substantial increase
in the compliance rate of children to CPAP therapy, making it easier for
both clinicians and parents to treat pediatric OSA without surgery.
Some healthcare professionals have been using the Nasal-Aire
II Petite off-label because of its non-claustrophobic design,? said
David Randall, Director of Business Development at InnoMed Technologies.
We expect the FDA 510(k) clearance to boost Nasal-Aire II
Petite sales among healthcare professionals who refuse to use products
off-label and finally offer them a compelling interface option to choose
CPAP therapy over surgery.?

In addition to treating pediatric OSA, there is also an immense need for
a comfortable, non-claustrophobic interface to provide positive pressure
based non-invasive ventilation (NIV) in both acute care and homecare
settings. The Nasal-Aire II Petite has received 510(k)
clearance for this application as well. It is common knowledge amongst
clinicians that the NIV interface is a very important, if not the most
important factor in the success of NIV. When NIV fails, the only option
available to the clinician is intubation, which brings with it, a whole
host of complications, not to mention the risk of ventilator associated
pneumonia (VAP). Hence, the availability of a 510(k) cleared interface
such as Nasal-Aire II Petite is likely to positively
influence the outcomes with pediatric NIV.

Autodesk Launches Expanded Marketing Channel for Building Product Manufacturers

Business Wire, Dec 02, 2009

Autodesk Seek Web Service Now Integrated with Autodesk Web Applications
to Help Building Product Manufacturers Connect with Designers and
Consumers

LAS VEGAS — Autodesk,
Inc. (NASDAQ:ADSK), a leader in 2D and 3D design, engineering and
entertainment software, announced that it is expanding the Autodesk
Seek web service to include additional targeted marketing channels
for building product manufacturers (BPMs) that will help them reach and
engage commercial and residential design professionals as well as
homeowners. Autodesk is connecting Autodesk Seek to two Autodesk
technology previews, Project
Dragonfly, a home design application, and Project
Showroom, an interactive web service that enables users to mix and
match products in lifelike room settings.

Through technology and economic shifts, the building industry is in the
midst of a rapid evolution that is requiring changes from building
product manufactures to reach their customers, said Jeff Wright, senior
director, Autodesk Content Network. Overall marketing budgets are down,
yet designers are demanding richer information packaged for their
specific needs from manufacturers. Having recognized this need, Autodesk
is expanding the Seek web service to offer building product marketers a
scalable, high-impact channel to connect with their target customers and
measure their engagement.

Autodesk Seek is a web service that provides building designers with
branded and generic building product models and associated design
content via a web browser or directly from AutoCAD
and Revit-based
software applications. Designers can use Seek to quickly search and
embed building products including 3D models, 2D drawings and
performance data in their projects, which can greatly facilitate the building
information modeling (BIM) process. First launched in 2008, Autodesk
Seek has grown to encompass more than 36,000 products from nearly 1,200
manufacturers.

Dacor Kitchen Appliances Now Available in Project Dragonfly

The integration of Autodesk Seek with Project Dragonfly and Project
Showroom offers new opportunities for BPMs to connect directly with
homeowners and to provide a personalized experience for their customers.
Dacor, a leading luxury kitchen appliance design, manufacturing and
distribution company, is now offering customers the ability to design,
visualize and experiment with their products using Project Dragonfly, an
intuitive and highly engaging, free** web application that homeowners
can use to configure room designs and layouts on the fly from any
computer or browser.

Technology offers new ways to engage with customers and provide a more
personalized experience. As we evolve our marketing plans to take
advantage of this, it made sense to partner with Autodesk given their
strong customer base of professional designers and history of innovation
in the manufacturing and AEC industries, said Steve Joseph, vice
president of marketing at Dacor. The combination of Autodesk Seek,
Project Dragonfly and Project Showroom will help Dacor reach and connect
with designers, give our customers the opportunity to directly
participate in the design process, and help our company realize
significant cost savings on set construction and product photography.

Dacor plans to take advantage of the new integration between Autodesk
Seek and Project Showroom, a hosted service for delivery of synthetic
photography that building product manufacturers can provide via their
