HIS time-travelling adventures as Dr Who have made him a household name.

Now Scots actor David Tennant is hoping for similar success in America after landing a lead role in a new comedy drama.

The 38-year-old from Bathgate, West Lothian, will play a Chicago legal eagle in Rex is Not Your Lawyer, a one-hour pilot for U.S. network NBC.

Directed by David Semel, whose past hits include the cult favourite Heroes, the show centres on Rex Alexander, a lawyer who coaches his clients to represent themselves after he suffers panic attacks. The pilot show was given the green light by NBC bosses in August, and Tennant won the lead role after an audition.

It will mark yet another step in the actor’s remarkable career, which cure panic attacks has seen him take on everything from Shakespearean roles to a part in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Tennant, who has played the Time Lord on the BBC since 2005, will star in a two-part Christmas special before handing over the role of the Doctor to Matt Smith. Speaking of his decision to quit the series, he said: ‘I think it’s better to go when there’s a chance that people might miss you, rather than hang around and outstay your welcome.’ His next outing in the Tardis will come later this month, in a new Dr Who special called The Waters of Mars.

Set on the Red Planet in 2059, it will see him threatened by zombie-like aliens while trying to fight a parasitic virus that is decimating settlers on Mars
